Adult Neuropsychologist

Hector Y. Adames, Psy.D. obtained his doctorate in clinical psychology from Wright State University in Ohio. He completed an internship in neuropsychology and a postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Center for Translational Cognitive Neuroscience. Dr. Adames currently holds an academic appointment as Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, where he teaches graduate courses in assessment, psychopathology, psychopharmacology and ethics. He is licensed in both Illinois and New York, and is bilingual, providing services in both English and Spanish.

Specialty areas of research include healthy and diseased memory. Dr. Adames has published and presented his scholarly work at both national and international professional conferences. Specialty areas of clinical practice include both psychotherapy and neuropsychological assessment, focusing on adults with cognitive disorders of aging, learning disorders, attention deficits and hyperactivity, anxiety and mood disorders, and those adjusting to neurologic injury or diagnosis such as tumor, traumatic brain injury or multiple sclerosis. Dr. Adames has experience evaluating eligibility for school or test accommodations, and liaisons regularly with higher education institutions. Dr. Adames also offers supportive consultation to caregivers interested in learning ways to manage and improve the wellbeing of family members with neurocognitive deficits. He also provides Therapeutic Assessment, a brief interventional approach aimed at helping patients learn new skills to accommodate deficits identified by test results. Dr. Adames has a special interest and expertise in working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. He incorporates the unique world views of the individual to inform evidence-based practice and believes that the quality of the relationship between the psychotherapist and the client is the mechanism of change, growth and healing.
