Clinical Neuropsychologist 

Aimee Karstens, Ph.D., M.A., L.P., is a licensed clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in dementia-causing neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Lewy Body diseases, innovative digital cognitive assessments, and multicultural neuropsychology (including interpreter assisted evaluations). She provides neuropsychological evaluations to adults with neurological, medical, and/or psychiatric concerns, and offers recommendations to patients and their loved ones through individual feedback sessions when appropriate.  She additionally conducts brief psychotherapy for adults adjusting to neurological disorders and/or brain injury (e.g., brain tumor, multiple sclerosis), in-person or through telehealth. Dr. Karstens is licensed in both Illinois and Minnesota. 

Dr. Karstens completed her doctoral degree from the University of Illinois, Chicago where she was granted an NIH T32 Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias Fellowship. She completed a predoctoral clinical psychology internship at Brown University in the neuropsychology track and a postdoctoral medical psychology fellowship at Mayo Clinic, Rochester in the neuropsychology specialty. Prior to joining Michigan Avenue Neuropsychologists, Dr. Karstens held an Assistant Professor position at the Mayo Clinic and led their outpatient clinical neuropsychology service program for non-English language speakers. 

Specialty areas of research include modifiable and biological risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia (e.g., diet, APOE genotype), innovative and digital cognitive assessments, and normative data development. Much of Dr. Karsten’s work has been conducted in underserved populations including Black and Hispanic/Latino older adults and women or individuals with female reproductive organs. She was the principal investigator on a study adapting a novel self-administered cognitive assessment for the Spanish language through the Mayo Test Drive web-based platform and is currently a co-investigator and consultant on multiple studies. In addition to her clinical work and research, Dr. Karstens has been involved in teaching, supervision, and patient advocacy.
